Smart Video Recorder and Video Podcasts

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to talk technology integration with Dave Sladkey and Scott Miller from Naperville Central HS in Naperville, IL. Dave and Scott are the creators of the new video podcast Teaching With SMARTBoard. We had a lively discussion and I was impressed with how they were using technology to engage the students.

Here is a short video that shows how Dave and Scott created a student-centered learning environment where their students create video podcasts that describe how to solve various Math problems. These videos can be uploaded to the Internet and viewed at any time.

I used the $15 headsets. We keep them in plastic bags (to keep them from tangling) and then a suitcase like container. Nothing special. I found the headsets that have an on/off switch sometimes get turned off. Better not to have a choice. We use the smartboard recorder feature for the software. I change the frames per second down to 2 or 3 because of space issues. There is another free screen capture software called Debut. This software uses less space but is not as easy to use for the students. I hope it will work out for you. Your students will love it.

Thank you for posting this video. It really gives me a sense of possibilities. Unfortunately since we don't have tablet PCs, I think we'll have to do on our classroom SB.

Maybe have everyone do the planning process and then randomly select a pair to do the actual videocast.

I'm interested to know what kind of headphone/microphone setup you used. We have purchased several and I'm always on the lookout for new ideas. I have found that either they are really inexpensive and frequently break OR they are expensive and last a while. Is there any intermediate choices?

Thanks again.
