SMARTBoards and Some Fun Notebook Stuff

Sometimes I get off on a tangent and start doing stuff that I don't really have time to do. This morning I found myself riding that tangent making a few Notebook files that are both educational and fun.

The first Notebook file comes from a link I found on Twitter from cnansen that displays word puzzles. The application on the Internet is actually better than my Notebook file, however, the graphics may be a little small for the SMART Board so I turned it into a Notebook application.

I absolutely love these kind of puzzles! I put each puzzle on a separate page and students touch the blue cloud to reveal the answer to the puzzle. The last page of the file uses the Question Image Reveal object to display the puzzles and answers. {The answer to the word puzzle displayed here is "Just Between You and Me"}

The idea for the 2nd Notebook file comes from my mom who sent me an email with a little Math trick that proves "you" are the best role model. The Notebook file walks students through a series of very easy Math problems to find the student's magic number. Students then use that number to see who their role model should be. The trick is that no matter what number the students start with, the final answer is always "9" assuming they did their Math correctly. At the end, a list of famous people is displayed and at the number "9" position, you insert your name. You've now proven to your students that you should be their role model! It's a lot of fun, especially for the teacher!

(Note: You will need to edit the last page of this Notebook file. The text object is underneath the picture. You'll need to unlock the objects, move the picture, edit the text object, put the picture object back in place, and re-lock the objects.)

SMART Boards and a Audio Visual Masterpiece called Auditorium

What do you get when you decide to monitor your Twitter network of friends more closely? You find outstanding resources that work great on the SMART Board.

Here's an amazingly beautiful and creative logic game called Auditorium that uses audio visual particles to create music. The object is to direct the flow of the particles so they fill up the containers. When they start filling up the containers, music is played. What's so cool about this is that there are many ways to solve the puzzles and move on to the next level.

The best way to learn how to play is to just start playing! Be careful, it's addicting!

SMARTBoards and the Fantastic Contraption

 

Here's an amazing educational game called the The Fantastic Contraption.

It promotes itself as a "fun online Physics puzzle game" which it most certainly is; however, you don't need to teach science to enjoy it. Students (and teachers) will get hooked very quickly trying to go through the levels.

The objective is to use wheels and rods to create a contraption that will move an object to a target area. You can also take a look at other people's contraptions to see how they succeeded. This application works great on the SMARTBoard and will keep your students (or you) occupied for a very long time.

SMARTBoards and Filling Up My Jugs

I love solving the riddles, especially when they have a Mathematics twist. Here's a really fun application to play on your SMARTBoard interactive whiteboard called "The Decanting Puzzle." It's a wonderful flash game that let's you solve 6 different riddles related to filling and emptying jugs to come up with the right amount of water. The problem is that the jugs don't having any markings on them. All you know is their capacity.

Click on the picture to play or right-click to save the flash application to your computer. You can then import application into Smart Notebook.

This application comes from www.subtangent.com. If you visit the site, you can get directions for downloading a bunch of other applications. Mathionaire and Broken Calculator are my personal favorites.
