SMART Boards and The Magic Pen Game

I get requests all the time for more interactive activities that are not only fun but actually make the kids think. In my search for new and exciting web applications for the classroom, I always start at Danny Nicholson's The Whiteboard Blog. In my book, this is the best blog for teachers who use an interactive whiteboard in the classroom.

Danny has found an outstanding website for Science class called The Magic Pen Game. This game is amazing. I simply cannot stop playing it. The objective is to draw objects on the screen to try to move a red ball around so it hits various red flags that are located on the screen. You draw objects like ramps and balls and hinges where you determine where to place the fulcrum. All objects behave as if they exist in our physical world.

If you're a Science teacher and your students have access to a computer or an interactive whiteboard, quit reading my blog and head over to The Magic Pen.

Magicpen

In the example above, the object is for the red ball to hit the red flag. I drew two ramps and two circles. The green circle is falling and should hit the orange circle so it rolls onto the ramp and then it should hit the red ball which should roll down the orange ramp and hit the red flag. There are a lot of other ways to get the red ball to hit the red flag by drawing objects on the screen.

Enjoy!

SMART Boards and Student Engagement

Here's a great example of student engagement using the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. Watch as a fourth grade student from New Hampshire demonstrates how to add fractions using the SMART Board, the Smart Recorder and a flash-based fraction object in Notebook.

Please read the blog post Adding Fractions - Flash - Student Explanation to read more about the importance of the SMART Board.  No other comments necessary!

Subscribing to SMART Board Resources

Recently, I posted a short article called "Sharing is Caring" on the new Digital Learning Environments website. In this article I discuss why teachers should share what they know and I provide some great examples of how other teachers are sharing resources.

The easiest way to keep up-to-date with what other teachers are sharing is to subscribe to their resources so you're notified whenever they make updates. Here are a few of the places I visited this week that I believe are worthy of a subscription:

1. The Whiteboard Blog by Danny Nicholson: This blog contains "Hints, tips, news and discussion about the use of Interactive Whiteboards and other technologies in the classroom." Click Here to Subscribe

2. ICT and Learning blog by Ross Hampton: His latest post talks about a good online photo editor. Click Here to Subscribe

3. ICT in my Classroom blog by Tom Barrett: Always a great blog to add to your Google Reader. Click Here to Subscribe

4. The EDCompass newsletter from Smart Technologies: This month's issue is very informative. Definitely subscribe to this great online magazine.Click Here to Subscribe

5. The SMARTBoard podcast from Ben Hazzard and Joan Badger: I haven't mentioned this podcast lately but Ben and Joan have been in top form and their weekly podcast is a must for any SMART Board user. Click Here to Subscribe

6. Teaching with SMARTBoard from Scott Miller and Dave Sladkey: Their new video podcasts are great. Please check it out! Click Here to Subscribe

By the way, don't forget to subscribe to the Teachers Love SMART Boards blog. If you need help subscribing to my resource or any of these resources, please don't hesitate to send me a quick message.

How the SMART Board has Changed My Teaching

I ran across a wonderful blog post entitled, How the SMART Board has Changed My Teaching from author James Tubbs on his blog misterteacher.com. This post highlights his initial experiences in using the SMART Board interactive whiteboard in the classroom. I think James captures the excitement of having a new SMART Board in the classroom and he keenly identifies some of the new challenges that come along with having such a fun and effective tool.

Iphone Also, if you want to hear about the first night I spent with my iPhone and why that has anything to do with a SMART Board, read my blog post entitled, The Wow Factor and the SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard: "Do You Got Wow?" on the Digital Learning Environments website.

Have a great weekend!

SMART Boards and Digital Learning Environments

I have a new website to share with everyone that's dedicated to digital learning. It's called Digital Learning Environments: Tools and Technologies for Effective Classrooms. The site is sponsored by a number of key players in the technology world including Intel and HP. Here's a screenshot of the main page that includes hyperlinks to all the sections of the site.

Every couple of weeks, I will be blogging about various ways to integrate the SMART Board and other digital tool into the classroom. Here's a link to my first post, The Wow Factor and the SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard: "Do You Got Wow?"  My next blog post will present information, ideas and applications for creating screencasts and using them as a learning resource.

Please share this new website with anyone interested in using technology more effectively in the classroom.

SMARTBoard and The Brainbox Challenge

While reading through my twitter messages this morning I ran across a fun website that was shared by my good friend Danny from across the pond.

It appears the BBC will be broadcasting a new show called The Brainbox Challenge. To help promote the show, the BBC has a website that has some great interactive brain challenges. The games Shaping Up and Total Recall are perfect games for the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. The other games are okay but they require you to use a keyboard.

Danny runs a great blog called The Whiteboard Blog that is not to be missed. It is such a great website for interactive whiteboard resources; his last post describes a quick lesson starter idea that uses a countdown clock. While you're there, check out his Think Bank site. You'll be glad you did!

Sharing is Caring

What does the title of this blog post mean? From my point of view as an educator, it means teachers are unique in the sense that they don't compete against one another; we don't horde resources; we don't ignore the needs of a student in another classroom; we don't submarine our co-workers to get ahead; and we certainly don't put our needs ahead of the students'. I left the systems consulting profession 12 years ago because I didn't feel I was really helping anyone. My work was helping other people become more wealthy but I've come to learn that money has nothing to do with happiness. When I became a teacher, the word "passion" now had meaning to me.

Over the past two years, I've moved out of the classroom and began focusing on helping teachers use technology to improve the learning process. What's great about this new focus is that helping teachers use technology to improve the learning process can take many different forms. For example, if I can use technology to help make children feel safer inside the classroom, I'm accomplishing my goal; if I can use technology to help a teacher become better organized, I'm accomplishing my goal; if I can use technology to help create authentic learning situations, I'm accomplishing my goal. Using technology isn't about hardware and software, it's about utilizing new and improved resources to make improvements on different areas of our lives. In my case, I like to find new and improved resources that increase a student's ability to learn. If the technology doesn't improve the process, why use it!!!

Technology does not need to be something that we physically touch. For example, a new method or procedure for doing something more effectively can be referred to as new technology. Often times, we take different technologies to create a new technology for doing something. This is exactly what is happening right now to create a new technology I like to call "Sharing Technology." Internet technology, computer technology, software technology, etc. are all improving to point where more and more people can begin to incorporate these new technologies to create new and exciting methods for sharing and using information. Sharing technologies allow us to access information and resources never before available. In addition, we can access this new information quickly and easily. TeacherTube, Wikipedia, Twitter, Google Reader, etc. can all be used to bring relevant information to us immediately. You can actually set up an application like Google Reader to bring relevant information to you before you ask for it. Amazing!

So, what does "Sharing is Caring" mean? Well, as educators, we now have the ability to share our thoughts, our expertise, our techniques, our software programs, our ideas, our reflections, our favorite websites, our schedules, our hopes, our vision, our pictures, our dislikes, our email, our lesson plans, or our lectures. We can share these things because the technology now makes it easy. We can share these things because educators are not competitors; we share these things because that is what a teacher does. Teachers are perhaps the most compassionate people in the world. They care a great deal for other people, and as such, they, by definition, impart what they know using the techniques that work best for them.

The two words that come to mind when I think about what it means to be a "teacher" is caring and sharing. This blog is just one way that I can use technology to be a better teacher. This blog is my way of sharing and caring.

SMARTBoard Blog Report #4

Good morning! Some of you may have noticed that I've been away for a week. I've been working on some big projects and decided to take a week off from my blog. This was such a mistake! I miss perusing the Internet for great resources for your SMART Board.

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of great SMART Board resources being shared through blogs like Teachers Love SMART Boards.

1. The Whiteboard Blog by Danny Nicholson. Danny continues to provide some outstanding resources to use on your interactive whiteboard. I also like that Danny often shares High School Science resources. Today's blog post highlights a great chemistry lesson for the SMART Board that helps with balancing equations.

You can find a lot more of these resources on his Think Bank website.

2. Here's a blog called Smart Ideas for SMART Board Integration by Angie Bunday. This is a great resource for SMART Board users. If you send her a note, maybe she'll include my blog in her list of SMART Board resources! :o)

3. Here's another blog that has some good SMART Board resources called ed-Tech Ninja. Not only will you find some great Notebook lesson files here, you'll also find other great resources for the SMART Board. The latest post on this site is called Telling Time and it includes a Smart Notebook file download.

4. While most of my readers know about the SMARTBoard Lesson Podcast site from Ben and Joan, it's always worth another mention. This week's podcast is about Point of View and includes a wonderful Notebook lesson created by Joan. In addition, you can hear my tip for converting Text to Speech and they share a great website that includes interactive Physics activities.

SMARTBoard Tips and Tricks: Text to Speech

I just recorded another audio tip for Ben and Joan who create the wonderful SMARTBoard Lesson Podcast. Since this is a visual blog, I decided to create a video of the tip I submitted and share it with you here. The video demonstrates how to use the SMART Keyboard to convert text into speech.

I found this tip on the SMART Exchange Forum. It was submitted by forum user Anne Marie and Smart Technology trainer Alejandro.
